Google Sites - A Beginner's Guide to Building a Website

Google Sites

Google Sites was launched as Jot Spot, the name and sole product of a software company that provides enterprise social software. It is mainly aimed at small and medium businesses. The company was founded by Exide's co-founders Joe Cross and Graham Spencer.

In February 2006, Jotspot Business 2.0 was named part of the "Next Net 25" and in May 2006, it was honored as one of InfoWorld's "15 Start-ups to Watch". In October 2006, Jadspot was acquired by Google. On February 28, 2008, Google Sites using Jotspot technology was released. The service is free, but users need a domain name, which Google provided for $10. However, as of May 21, 2008, Google Sites is available for free, separately from Google Apps, and does not require a domain.

In August 2020, the new Google Sites became the default website creation option and in November 2021, all websites created with classic Google Sites were archived.

What is Google Sites?

Google Sites is a platform built by Google that allows you to create a website without any programming experience. This platform is used by both professionals and beginners alike, because it's easy to use and has a lot of features for free.

How to create a new website in Google Sites

To create a new website in Google Sites, all you need to do is go to the "sites" menu item in your google account, and then drag and drop a Web Site template onto your desired web space. You can also choose from among dozens of ready-made templates, or you can build your own custom website from scratch.

How Google Sites works

The basic concept behind Google Sites is very simple: You have a webpage with content on one side, and on the other side are pages that allow users to submit content, manage their subscriptions, or make requests. All you need to do is add some basic code to your pages (more about code later), and you're ready to go!

Which features are available in Google Sites?

Google Sites has many features that are common in more advanced website-building platforms like WordPress or Magento. The most important ones are:

·     Mobile responsive design - Your site will look great on all devices, regardless of how pixel perfect your display may be on a desktop computer screen.

·      Multilingual support - No matter what language your visitors speak, you can easily add translations for all of the text on your site. Just enter the translated text into the "Languages & Region " tab of your Settings page, and Google will take care of the rest!

Best practices for hosting a website in Google Sites

Although Google Sites is relatively simple to use, there are some best practices that should always be followed when hosting any website:

·   Use SSL - Most online browsers (including Chrome and Firefox) now encrypt connections between your computer and the websites that you visit; this will help protect yourself against snooping by third parties who might be intercepting traffic between your computer and the sites that you visit. You can force secure connections using Cloud Flare's Hide My Ass service or by installing an SSL certificate on your server.

·  Avoid unnecessary loading times - Many scripts used in websites load slowly because they're Counted Asynchronously From The Document Root()

·  To improve performance, try putting all critical scripts into an asynchronicity-isolated module file instead of loading them from every page throughout your site. This way, they'll only load when they're actually needed instead of during page load
