Krishna Janmashtami 2022
Devotees, who observe fast on
Janmashtami, should have the only single meal a day before Janmashtami. On
fasting day, devotees take Sankalpa to observe a day-long fast and to break it
on the next day when both Rohini Nakshatra and Ashtami Tithi are over. Some
devotees break the fast when either Rohini Nakshatra or Ashtami Tithi is over.
Sankalpa is taken after finishing morning rituals and the day-long fasting
begins with Sankalpa.
The time to perform Krishna Puja is
during Nishita Kaal which is the midnight as per Vedic time-keeping. Devotees
perform detailed ritualistic Puja during midnight and it involves all sixteen
steps which are part of Shodashopachara Puja Vidhi. Please check Krishna
Janmashtami Puja Vidhi which lists all Puja steps for Janmashtami along with
Vedic Mantra to perform the Puja.
Krishna Janmashtami
Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated on
the eighth day of the bright half of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada
(August-September). It is a festival dedicated to Lord Krishna, the eighth
incarnation of Vishnu. On this day, devotees worship Krishna at his birthplace
Vrindavan.
According to Hindu mythology, Krishna
was born on the eighth day of Bhadrapada in the city of Mathura. He was born in
a cowherd family named Nanda. His parents were Vasudeva and Devaki. He had two
brothers Balarama and Subhadra.
Krishna's father Vasudeva was a
Yadava king who ruled over the kingdom of Mathura. His mother Devaki was a
princess from the royal house of Videha. She was married to Vasudeva after her
marriage to King Kamsa.
After hearing about Krishna's birth,
Vasudeva decided to go to Mathura to meet him. However, he was stopped by the
police while traveling. When he reached Mathura, he saw Krishna playing with
cows and calves. He asked Krishna's nursemaid where he could find him. She told
him that Krishna was playing with the cows and calves.
Vasudeva then went to the place where
Krishna was playing with the animals. There he met Krishna's foster mother
Yashoda. She told him that she would bring Krishna to him if he promised not to
harm any of the animals. Vasudeva agreed to this condition.
Yashoda took Krishna back to her
home. Later, Vasudeva came to visit them. He brought gifts for Krishna and gave
him a toy bow and arrow. Then he left.
Krishna grew up in the care of
Yashoda. One day, he went out to play with the cows and calves again. While
playing, he accidentally killed a calf. Yashoda scolded him for killing the
calf. Krishna apologized to her and promised never to kill anything ever again.
Krishna became popular among the
people of Mathura due to his kindness towards animals. People started calling
him Govinda, meaning 'the beloved'.
Once, Krishna went to the forest to
play with the cows. He fell asleep under a tree. A hunter named Jarasandha
happened to pass by. He noticed Krishna sleeping under the tree and thought
that he might be a deer. So he shot an arrow at him. Krishna woke up just in
time and escaped death.
Another time, Krishna was playing
with the calves in the river Yamuna. He jumped into the water and swam across.
As he did so, he heard a voice saying that he should return to his own land. He
obeyed the command and returned to his foster mother Yashoda's home.
Krishna's foster mother Yashaodaka
was pleased to see him. She prepared milk for him and fed him some sweets.
Krishna liked the sweet food and drank the milk.
At night, Krishna slept on the floor
near Yashoda's bed. He was afraid of being kidnapped by thieves. So he tied
himself to a post using a rope.
The next morning, Yashoda got up
early and went outside to take a bath. She forgot to untie Krishna from the
post. By mistake, she pulled the rope off and Krishna ran away.
